Appliance Alley celebrates July with more pop than corn Does anyone remember the late ’70s commercial for a brand of microwave oven, opening with a “typical” American family sitting at the dinner table with dishes of popcorn in front of them? As the kids and their dad stare morosely at their plates, mom comes to the table with yet another heaping bowl of popcorn, cheerily announcing “and for dessert...” In 1946, Dr. Percy Spencer, a self-taught engineer with the Raytheon Corporation, noticed something very unusual when testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron. Placing some popcorn kernels near the tube, he watched as the popcorn sputtered, cracked and popped all over his lab. Microwave popcorn – the very first use of microwave hand, thankfully, most of us can cook more than popcorn in it. Since 1995, Appliance Alley, one of the last locally owned appliance dealers in San Diego, has been selling microwave ovens, stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers and more.
